November – Coming to America

November – Coming to America – a Two Part Project
Part 1: In 1620 the Pilgrims made their way to the New World. The journey was long and arduous.

  • Why do you think those people traveled so far away from all they had known?
  • What hardships did they face along their journey?
  • How might they have felt living in the strange New World?
  • What kinds of things do you think they needed to know and do to survive?

ACTIVITY: Students in Mrs. Carroll’s Grade 4 class will act as “virtual field trip partners” by sharing information LIVE from Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts through the use of Edmodo and Skype/GHO. Reciprocal classrooms will participate by asking questions about life in the 1620’s which will be answered by their virtual field trip partners.

Complete the form below to participate:

Part 2: Many of our own families have found themselves coming to a new country for one reason or another.
  • What was their reason for emigrating to the United States?
  • Did they follow other family members or come alone?
  • What kinds of things did they need to know before coming to the U.S.?
  • What hardships have they faced?

ACTIVITY: Students will research and share their family’s story of emigration via Kidblog using the questions above as a guide. They should add any other information which is meaningful. Reciprocating classrooms will comment on student blogs. (As an alternative assignment – students could research a famous immigrant and write from that person’s point of view.)
